Facebook Profile Picture Size: 320 × 320

Uploaded at 320, shown at 170 on desktop and smaller everywhere else — crop for the small version.

Exact size 320 × 320 px Ratio 1:1 Max file 4 MB Formats JPG, PNG Source Recommended
100% private. Your image is resized on your own device using your browser. It is never uploaded to a server, and there is no account to create.

Works with images up to roughly 50 MP (about 8000 × 6000 px) depending on your device's memory. WebP export is unavailable in a few older Safari versions — the option is disabled automatically when that is the case.

How it works

Three steps, no account, no watermark.

Add your image

Drag a file onto the box, click to browse, or paste straight from your clipboard with Ctrl + V. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Frame it

The crop box is already locked to 320 × 320. Drag the image to move it and scroll or pinch to zoom until it looks right.

Download

Pick PNG, JPG or WebP. The file is compressed automatically to stay under Facebook's limit — or grab every Facebook size at once as a ZIP.

About the facebook profile picture size

Facebook profile pictures are uploaded as a square at 320 × 320 and rendered at 170 × 170 on a desktop profile, inside a rounded shape rather than a full circle. In the feed, in comments and in Messenger they shrink considerably further, and that smaller rendering is where the picture is actually seen by most people most of the time.

Facebook differs from Instagram in one useful way: the crop is a rounded square rather than a circle, so the corners are softened rather than removed entirely. You still should not put anything critical there, but a slightly wider crop survives better than it would on a purely circular platform. For pages rather than people, the same rule applies as everywhere else — a mark reads, a wordmark does not.

The complete list — click any row to load that size into the tool, or use the ZIP button to export all of them at once. Official means the platform publishes that figure itself; Recommended means it is the widely used standard where the platform publishes none.

Tips for Facebook

What actually makes the difference once the size is right.

Design for 170 pixels, not 320

That is the desktop display size, and the feed shows it smaller still. Judge your crop at the small size.

Rounded square, not a full circle

Facebook softens the corners rather than cutting them off, so a slightly wider crop survives here better than on Instagram or X.

Pages should use a mark

A logo with a company name attached becomes illegible in the feed. The symbol alone stays recognisable.

Watch the cover photo overlap

On a page, the profile picture sits over the lower-left of the cover photo. Design the two together.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a Facebook profile picture?

Upload 320 × 320 square. Facebook displays it at 170 × 170 on desktop inside a rounded shape, and smaller in the feed and Messenger.

Why does Facebook crop my profile picture?

It fits a square into a rounded frame. Cropping to a centred square yourself means you decide the framing rather than Facebook.

What size is a Facebook page cover photo?

851 × 315 on desktop, cropped to about 640 × 360 on mobile. It has its own page on this site.

Can I upload a larger profile picture?

Yes, and a larger square gives Facebook's compressor a better source. It will be scaled to 320 either way.

Does the profile picture overlap the cover?

On pages, yes — it sits over the lower-left of the cover photo on desktop. Keep that area of the cover clear.

Is my photo uploaded to your servers?

No. Everything is processed in your browser.
