About the shopify product image size
Shopify recommends square product images at 2048 × 2048 pixels. Square matters because almost every theme crops product cards to 1:1 on the collection grid — if your photos are a mix of portrait and landscape, that grid looks ragged no matter how good the individual shots are. 2048 is the size that gives Shopify's zoom enough detail to work without going overboard.
The other half of the job is weight. Shopify allows up to 20 MB per image, but a product page loading eight 15 MB photos is a page nobody waits for, and page speed is directly tied to conversion on mobile. Exporting a compressed 2048 × 2048 JPG — or WebP, which most themes now serve — gives you the sharpness of a large image at a fraction of the size.

Shoot and crop square
Collection grids crop to 1:1. Cropping to square yourself means you decide what stays in frame, not the theme.
Keep consistent margins
Products photographed at the same distance with the same padding make a catalogue look professional. Use the same zoom level across a batch.
White or one flat backdrop
A consistent background is what separates a store that looks stocked from one that looks improvised — and it compresses smaller too.
Compress before uploading
Shopify serves what you give it. A 2048 × 2048 JPG around 300–500 KB looks identical to a 6 MB one and loads several times faster.
