About the zoom virtual background size
Zoom is unusual here: its documentation states there are no size restrictions on virtual backgrounds at all. What Zoom actually asks is that you crop the image to match your camera's aspect ratio before uploading, and it suggests a minimum of 1280 × 720 if you are not sure what that ratio is. So there is no official number to quote — there is a rule, and 1920 × 1080 is what that rule produces for the 16:9 webcam in almost every laptop.
The reason the ratio matters more than the pixel count is what Zoom does when they disagree. Give it a square or portrait image and Zoom stretches or crops it to fill the video frame, which is how you end up with a bookshelf that leans or a window sliced in half behind your head. Matching the ratio first means the background sits behind you exactly as you designed it, on every call.

Keep the centre uncluttered
That is where you sit. Detail directly behind your head fights with your face and confuses the edge detection.
Avoid strong patterns and text
Without a green screen, Zoom's segmentation struggles against busy backgrounds, and text behind you ends up half-erased as you move.
Darker and simpler reads better on a call
