Instagram Reel Cover Size: 1080 × 1920
Full screen it is 9:16 — but your profile grid keeps only 1080 × 1350 of it. Frame for both.

About the instagram reel cover size
A Reel cover is a 1080 × 1920 image, matching the 9:16 video frame. What makes it trickier than a Story is that Instagram shows it in two different shapes and you only get to upload one. In the Reels feed the full 9:16 frame plays. On your profile grid, Instagram crops that cover to roughly 1080 × 1350 — a 4:5 portrait — and takes it from the centre.
This is why so many Reel covers have a title cut in half on the profile page. The fix is to think of the cover as having an inner rectangle: the middle 4:5 area is what the grid keeps, and everything above and below it is only ever seen while the Reel is playing full screen. Put the face, the product or the words inside that inner rectangle and the cover works in both places without compromise.

| Image | Size (px) | Max file | Source | What to know | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Story / Reel | 1080 × 1920 | 4 MB | Recommended | 9:16. The top and bottom ~250 px sit under the interface. | |
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 4 MB | Recommended | 1:1. The classic feed format and the safest for carousels. | |
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1350 | 4 MB | Recommended | 4:5. Takes the most vertical space in the feed. | |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 4 MB | Recommended | 1.91:1. The smallest footprint in the feed — use it sparingly. | |
| Profile picture | 320 × 320 | 2 MB | Recommended | Displayed as a small circle — a tight crop wins. | |
| Reel cover | 1080 × 1920 | 4 MB | Recommended | Full screen it is 9:16, but the profile grid crops it to 1080 × 1350. |
Tips for Instagram
What actually makes the difference once the size is right.
Frame inside the centre 4:5
The profile grid crops to about 1080 × 1350 from the middle. Anything outside that band exists only in the full-screen view.
Keep the bottom third clear
The caption, your username and the audio label all sit over the lower part of the frame during playback.
Instagram lets you upload a cover separately
You are not stuck with a video frame. A designed still is almost always sharper and better composed than a paused moment.
Design covers as a row of three
The profile grid shows three across. Covers planned in threes make a feed look art-directed rather than accidental.
Frequently asked questions
What size is an Instagram Reel cover?
1080 × 1920 pixels at 9:16, matching the video. On your profile grid Instagram crops it to roughly 1080 × 1350 from the centre.
Why is my Reel cover cropped on my profile?
Because the grid uses a 4:5 crop while the Reel itself is 9:16. Keep the important part in the middle of the frame and both views work.
Can I change a Reel cover after posting?
Yes, you can edit the cover of a published Reel. Having the correctly sized image ready makes it quick.
Is a Reel cover the same as a Story?
The canvas is the same 1080 × 1920, but a Story is never cropped to 4:5 for a grid, so it has more usable space.
Should the cover have text on it?
A short hook helps people decide to watch, as long as it sits inside the centre 4:5 area that the grid preserves.
