WhatsApp Profile Picture Size: 640 × 640
Square in, circle out — crop it yourself instead of letting WhatsApp decide what to cut.
Drag the image to reposition it · scroll or pinch to zoom
Batch mode
Every image will be resized to and downloaded as one ZIP. Change the size below before you start.
Works with images up to roughly 50 MP (about 8000 × 6000 px) depending on your device's memory. WebP export is unavailable in a few older Safari versions — the option is disabled automatically when that is the case.
How it works
Three steps, no account, no watermark.
Add your image
Drag a file onto the box, click to browse, or paste straight from your clipboard with Ctrl + V. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Frame it
The crop box is already locked to 640 × 640. Drag the image to move it and scroll or pinch to zoom until it looks right.
Download
Pick PNG, JPG or WebP. The file is compressed automatically to stay under WhatsApp's limit — or grab every WhatsApp size at once as a ZIP.
About the whatsapp profile picture size
A WhatsApp profile picture is uploaded square and displayed as a circle. WhatsApp does not publish image specifications, so there is no official number to quote; 640 × 640 pixels is the size the industry has converged on, and it is comfortably sharp for every place the picture appears. If you want extra headroom on high-density screens, 1080 × 1080 does no harm.
The thing worth planning for is the circular crop and the scale. Your picture shows at a few hundred pixels on your own profile, but in a chat list it is roughly 50 pixels across, and in a group conversation smaller still. A full-body photo or a wide landscape becomes an unreadable smudge. Crop tight — head and shoulders, or a single clear object — and keep the subject away from the corners, which the circle removes entirely.
Every WhatsApp image size
The complete list — click any row to load that size into the tool, or use the ZIP button to export all of them at once. Official means the platform publishes that figure itself; Recommended means it is the widely used standard where the platform publishes none.

Tips for WhatsApp
What actually makes the difference once the size is right.
Crop tight and centre the face
The circle removes the corners of your square. A subject that fills most of the frame survives; one sitting in a corner gets cut in half.
Check it at 50 pixels
That is roughly how big it is in a chat list. If you cannot tell who it is at that size, crop closer.
Avoid busy backgrounds
At small sizes a cluttered background and the subject blur into one texture. A plain wall or a shallow depth of field reads far better.
Mind the compression
WhatsApp re-encodes what you upload. Starting from a clean, correctly sized square gives a noticeably better result than a huge photo squeezed down by the app.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a WhatsApp profile picture?
640 × 640 pixels square is the widely used standard. WhatsApp does not publish an official specification, so treat this as a well-established recommendation rather than a documented requirement.
Why does WhatsApp crop my photo?
The upload is square and the display is a circle, so anything outside the centred circle is hidden. Cropping to a square yourself lets you choose what stays.
Will a larger image look better?
Up to a point. 1080 × 1080 gives extra sharpness on high-density screens, but beyond that WhatsApp's own compression is the limiting factor, not your file.
Can I use a PNG?
Yes, though JPG is smaller for photographs and the difference is invisible after WhatsApp re-encodes it. Both are offered here.
What size is a WhatsApp status image?
1080 × 1920, a 9:16 full-screen vertical frame. It has its own page and is in the table below.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The crop happens on your own device inside the browser, and nothing is transmitted.
