Instagram Post Size: 1080 × 1080

Square, portrait or landscape — crop to the exact pixel size Instagram wants, with no surprise cropping in the feed.

Exact size 1080 × 1080 px Ratio 1:1 Max file 4 MB Formats JPG, PNG, WEBP Source Recommended
100% private. Your image is resized on your own device using your browser. It is never uploaded to a server, and there is no account to create.

Works with images up to roughly 50 MP (about 8000 × 6000 px) depending on your device's memory. WebP export is unavailable in a few older Safari versions — the option is disabled automatically when that is the case.

How it works

Three steps, no account, no watermark.

Add your image

Drag a file onto the box, click to browse, or paste straight from your clipboard with Ctrl + V. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.

Frame it

The crop box is already locked to 1080 × 1080. Drag the image to move it and scroll or pinch to zoom until it looks right.

Download

Pick PNG, JPG or WebP. The file is compressed automatically to stay under Instagram's limit — or grab every Instagram size at once as a ZIP.

About the instagram post size

Instagram gives you three feed shapes and one width. Every post is uploaded 1080 pixels wide; what changes is the height: 1080 for a square, 1350 for a portrait, and 566 for a landscape. Anything outside those ratios gets cropped by Instagram when it hits the feed, and the profile grid crops it again to a square regardless.

That double crop is the thing to plan for. A 4:5 portrait takes the most vertical space in the feed and stops the scroll better than anything else — but on your profile grid only the centre square of it survives. If the grid matters to your brand, keep the subject centred so both crops work. If reach matters more, go portrait and accept the grid crop.

Every Instagram image size
ImageSize (px)Max fileSourceWhat to knowAction
Story / Reel 1080 × 1920 4 MB Recommended 9:16. The top and bottom ~250 px sit under the interface.
Square post 1080 × 1080 4 MB Recommended 1:1. The classic feed format and the safest for carousels.
Portrait post 1080 × 1350 4 MB Recommended 4:5. Takes the most vertical space in the feed.
Landscape post 1080 × 566 4 MB Recommended 1.91:1. The smallest footprint in the feed — use it sparingly.
Profile picture 320 × 320 2 MB Recommended Displayed as a small circle — a tight crop wins.
Reel cover 1080 × 1920 4 MB Recommended Full screen it is 9:16, but the profile grid crops it to 1080 × 1350.

Tips for Instagram

What actually makes the difference once the size is right.

Portrait 4:5 owns the most screen

1080 × 1350 is the tallest image Instagram allows in the feed. It pushes competing posts off-screen and consistently earns longer dwell time than a square.

Centre the subject for the grid

Your profile grid crops every post to a square from the centre. A subject sitting at the top or bottom of a portrait post disappears there.

Keep every carousel slide the same ratio

Mixed ratios in one carousel make Instagram crop the odd ones out. Process all slides at the same size — the batch mode here does that in one go.

Leave a margin around text

Text near the edges collides with the profile name, the caption fade and the like button. Keep about 60 px of clear space on every side.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Instagram post size?

1080 × 1350 portrait for maximum feed space, 1080 × 1080 square for the most predictable crop across the feed and grid. Both are correct — it depends on whether reach or the grid matters more to you.

What are all the Instagram image dimensions?

Square 1080 × 1080, portrait 1080 × 1350, landscape 1080 × 566, Story and Reel 1080 × 1920, profile picture 320 × 320. All of them are listed and downloadable on this page.

Why does Instagram crop my post?

Instagram supports ratios between 1.91:1 and 4:5 only. Anything taller or wider is cropped to fit. Resizing first puts that choice in your hands.

Can I post a 4K photo to Instagram?

You can, but Instagram downscales everything to 1080 wide and recompresses it. Exporting at 1080 gives you control over the final quality instead.

How do I resize several photos for a carousel?

Use the batch mode on this page: drop all your images at once, pick a size, and download them as a ZIP with every slide at the same dimensions.

Does this tool add a watermark?

No. There is no watermark, no signup and no limit on how many images you resize.
