About the instagram profile picture size
Instagram stores profile pictures at 320 × 320 pixels and shows them as a circle. It is one of the smallest images on the platform and one of the hardest working: it appears above every Story ring, beside every comment, at the top of your profile, and in the suggestion carousels where people decide whether to follow you.
At that scale, and inside a circle, most photographs fail for the same reason — they were framed for a rectangle. A head-and-shoulders shot that looks natural as a square loses its ears and chin to the circular mask; a logo with a tagline becomes an unreadable smear. Crop closer than feels comfortable, keep the subject dead centre, and check the result at the size of a fingernail before you commit.

What actually makes the difference once the size is right.
Crop closer than feels right
The circular mask eats the corners and the display is tiny. A crop that looks too tight at full size usually looks correct in the app.
High contrast against the Story ring
Your picture is often surrounded by a bright gradient ring. A low-contrast image disappears inside it.
Business accounts: mark, not wordmark
A logo with words shrinks to nothing. A single letter, symbol or icon on a flat colour stays recognisable.
Upload larger than 320 if you like
Instagram stores at 320 but a larger square gives its compressor better material to work from. It will not hurt.
