Instagram Story Size: 1080 × 1920
Turn any photo into a full-screen 9:16 Story without Instagram cropping the part you wanted.
Drag the image to reposition it · scroll or pinch to zoom
Batch mode
Every image will be resized to and downloaded as one ZIP. Change the size below before you start.
Works with images up to roughly 50 MP (about 8000 × 6000 px) depending on your device's memory. WebP export is unavailable in a few older Safari versions — the option is disabled automatically when that is the case.
How it works
Three steps, no account, no watermark.
Add your image
Drag a file onto the box, click to browse, or paste straight from your clipboard with Ctrl + V. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Frame it
The crop box is already locked to 1080 × 1920. Drag the image to move it and scroll or pinch to zoom until it looks right.
Download
Pick PNG, JPG or WebP. The file is compressed automatically to stay under Instagram's limit — or grab every Instagram size at once as a ZIP.
About the instagram story size
Instagram Stories are 1080 × 1920 pixels — a 9:16 vertical frame that fills a phone screen edge to edge. Post anything else and Instagram either pillarboxes it with a blurred background of its own choosing, or crops into it without asking. Neither is a decision you want the app making for you.
There is also a hidden layout inside that frame. Roughly the top 250 pixels sit under the profile row and progress bars, and the bottom 250 pixels are covered by the reply box, the share icons and — if you use one — the swipe-up sticker. The middle 1080 × 1420 or so is the only region that is reliably clear. Frame your subject there and your Story reads the same on every phone.
Every Instagram image size
The complete list — click any row to load that size into the tool, or use the ZIP button to export all of them at once. Official means the platform publishes that figure itself; Recommended means it is the widely used standard where the platform publishes none.
| Image | Size (px) | Max file | Source | What to know | Action |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Story / Reel | 1080 × 1920 | 4 MB | Recommended | 9:16. The top and bottom ~250 px sit under the interface. | |
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 4 MB | Recommended | 1:1. The classic feed format and the safest for carousels. | |
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1350 | 4 MB | Recommended | 4:5. Takes the most vertical space in the feed. | |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 4 MB | Recommended | 1.91:1. The smallest footprint in the feed — use it sparingly. | |
| Profile picture | 320 × 320 | 2 MB | Recommended | Displayed as a small circle — a tight crop wins. | |
| Reel cover | 1080 × 1920 | 4 MB | Recommended | Full screen it is 9:16, but the profile grid crops it to 1080 × 1350. |
Tips for Instagram
What actually makes the difference once the size is right.
Respect the top and bottom 250 px
Progress bars and your username sit at the top; the reply field and share buttons at the bottom. Keep faces and text out of both bands.
One idea per Story
A Story is seen for two or three seconds. One photo, one short line of text — anything more gets tapped past.
Use blurred edges instead of stretching
If your photo is landscape, do not squash it. Fill the extra space with a blurred copy of the image so it reads as a deliberate design rather than a mistake.
Export at 1080 wide, not more
Instagram recompresses anything larger. Uploading a 4K image just means Instagram's compressor makes the quality decisions for you.
Frequently asked questions
What size is an Instagram Story?
1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 ratio. That is also the size for Reels covers and any full-screen vertical content on Instagram.
Why does Instagram crop my Story?
Because the photo is not 9:16. Instagram fits it to the screen and cuts whatever does not fit. Resizing to 1080 × 1920 first means you choose the crop instead.
How do I post a landscape photo as a Story?
Use the blurred background option in this tool. The full photo stays visible in the centre and the empty space is filled with a soft blur of the same image.
What file size should an Instagram Story be?
Instagram accepts large files, but staying around 4 MB keeps the quality high after Instagram's own compression. This tool compresses to that target automatically.
Does resizing lose quality?
Going down from a larger photo keeps the detail. What ruins quality is uploading a small image and letting Instagram stretch it up to 1080 wide.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Everything happens locally in your browser — the photo never leaves your device.
